Pest Control Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
How do I know what kind of pest I am dealing with?
A:

Black Diamond is happy to help you identify your pest problem. Send us your image via our contact page or even Facebook, and we’ll respond with more information. You can also stop by a Black Diamond office with the offending pest, and we’ll take a look at your issue. Sometimes an in-home estimate is best, which we will perform for free.

The issue with trying to identify the pest yourself is that there are thousands of types of insects in our area alone, each with different and similar characteristics. Black Diamond technicians are specially trained to not only eliminate pests, but to correctly identify them as well. So, trust the professionals at Black Diamond when you have a pest-related question. Have a current issue? Contact us today!

Q:
Do I need pest control in the winter?
A:

Many insects are much less active when it gets below 50 degrees, entering a state of "torpor" or deep sleep to conserve energy. When they feel the temperature get colder than they can handle, those that survive seek out warmth or a secure place to hide, and heated homes provide both. This results in pests being even more desperate to get inside, as cold and scarce resources make your house an even more ideal target. Warm winter days can result in even more opportunities for them to wake up and try to gain access to your home, resulting in waves of pests seeking shelter before the temperature drops again. This is why we offer ongoing programs to keep homes protected year-round.

Q:
Can having a roach, fly or mouse problem make me sick?
A:

Light infestations shouldn't pose any risk of illness. When entering the moderate to heavy infestation stage, pests can cause asthma, breathing issues or salmonella. It is best to call a pest control professional when you first start seeing insects or rodents.

Q:
I never had an insect problem until now. Why is this happening?
A:

There are many factors that may cause a pest issue including, but not limited to:

  • Houses move and settle, which can open up an area that will allow insects to enter the home.
  • Ants feed on aphids and honeydew, which are located in your landscaping. So, doing any new landscaping can disturb a colony and make them move into your home.
  • Construction nearby can move insects towards your home.
  • Weather patterns can cause insect pressure.
  • Visitors and foods brought into your home can also transport unwanted pests.
Q:
How often should pest control be done?
A:

Frequency of service depends on your individual needs. Each property and infestation is different. We do weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly and seasonal services.

Q:
Can I DIY pest control?
A:

DIY pest control is not recommended. In most cases, it can cause insects to disperse and move to areas that make it more challenging to control.
