Although scientists have known about the Zika virus for close to 70 years, it is just recently that this mosquito-borne illness has become common knowledge. The virus remained obsolete for nearly 60 years, then spread viciously through the Americas beginning in 2015. Brazil has been hit the hardest with 91,387 likely cases of the Zika virus from February 2016 to April 2016 and over 4,900 cases of babies born with microcephaly. This outbreak has caused major concerns for the upcoming Olympic games which are set to be in Rio de Janeiro. Some athletes have even opted out of competing at the Olympic games due to fear of contracting the virus. Beyond Brazil, there are close to 50 countries that have now reported cases of the virus, including the United States.
