Spring is finally here! It a great feeling being able to open the windows and let in some fresh clean air. This is also the time of year that many like to clean out old items and deep clean their home. We’ve compiled a list of helpful cleaning tips to help keep pests away.
Food: As mentioned before in a previous blog, keeping food sealed and put away is very important. Open food containers are a welcome invitation for pests to come and pig out. Pests like ants and cockroaches will gladly take whatever is left out, posing potential danger as they can sometimes carry diseases that are harmful to humans. Also remember to thoroughly clean up any spills. Items with sugar, such as juices, honey, jams and jellies, are beacons for these incests. Once they know there is a food source it will be hard to keep them, and their extended family, out of your kitchen.
Wet Areas: While you are cleaning your kitchen be sure to check for any leaks or wet areas near plumbing. Water is essential to sustaining life and this rule applies to insects like silverfish, termites, cockroaches and mosquitoes. And don’t forget to check the bathroom and any plumbing in the basement!
Standing Water: Speaking of wet areas, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Check the exterior of your home for low spots or areas that collect rainwater such as planters, pots, and pet bowls.
Plastic Storage: Cardboard is a common storage material but it can be a meal for pests such as mice, squirrels and even termites. Replace those old cardboard boxes with plastic tubs that have tight sealing lids.
Window Screens: You could be letting more than fresh air inside if you open your windows to screens with tears or holes. Be sure to inspect your screens before leaving windows or sliding doors open for extended periods of time.
